Over the past year I have really been enjoying newsprint slip transfers. They are simple, easy and allow me to easily paste drawings on rounded surfaces that would have otherwise been hard to draw on. It also allows me to make mistakes, if I make a mistake drawing directly onto the piece then I have to scratch the underglaze/ slip off and run the risk of messing up the surface of the piece. With the newsprint transfer I can just use a new piece of newsprint and start over. Below I have a step by step example of how I applied an undergalze newsprint transfer to a planter. The clay I used for all the pieces on this post is a cone 10 stone ware. I plan to fire both of them in the wood kiln. The planter will have no glaze, just slip sprayed on the inside and outside. I will use an orange slip that will have hues of orange, brown and red. I will apply the slip sparingly where the designs are so that the can still be seen. The lidded jar will have an orange slip on the outside and a blue glaze on the inside. I will also be careful applying the colored slip around the design on the jar so that it can be seen.
Below are some better images of the finished planter. (7.5 inches tall, 7.5 inches in diameter)
This lidded jar also has a newsprint transfer. The planter and the jar both have plants transferred on them to relate to my new body of work that focuses on nature. I didn't realize till recently why I was drawing plants and flowers all over my work. I realized its because health and wellness are very important to me. How does that relate to nature? Well, for me consuming/using only natural products, being outdoors, and drawing/making organic forms makes me feel well. I want my work to be meaningful to the user and brighten their day, the same way that my day is brightened when I see a flower outside.
