I recently made some plates on the wheel and then drew herbal plant illustraions on them. Ive been very excited about this project because the flat surface of the plates provides a great canvas for my illustrations. Ive been having a lot of fun making and drawing my illustrations so this project let me dive deeper into the illustrations.
I drew some elderberries on the plates to corrolate with my theme of herbal medicine. I want to foster ideas of ritual and manesfastion by drawing herbs on my pottery. I hope this educates the user about herbs and excites them to use herbs in their everyday ritual.
I used illustrations of elderberries I made on my tablet as reference for the plate designs (image 1).
I started out by throwing the plates on the wheel. Below is a time lapse video of me throwing one of them.
After throwing it I have to let it dry slowly so it doesn't warp. I let it dry while lightly covered with plastic for about a day then let it dry without plastic for half a day. Below is a time lapse of me trimming a plate.
After letting the plate dry slowly I bisque fired them then applied my slip decorations with light blue and purple underglaze. Here are some images of the light blue underglaze decoration, the diameter of these bowls are about 8 inches. ( ignore the dark graphite lines as they will not show up after they are fired)
Here is an image of a plate with purple underglaze. The diameter is 11 inches.
These plates are currently being fired in the wood kiln. The ones with light blue will come out very light and soft looking since they are porcelain. The one with purple underglaze will be much darker because it is made out of an iron rich stoneware. This work is leading me to a series of much larger plates that will have more illustrations on them and they will be displayed hanging on a wall. The designs will be more detailed and I will add words similar to the lettering in my reference sketch (image 1).
