Last week I made a teapot with a sharp angled body and slip transferred a goldenseal drawing onto it. This related to my new body of work regarding herbal medicine. Goldenseal is great for treating colds, skin problems and digestive issues. I want this line of work to educate about the uses of natural remedies and how beneficial herbs can be.
Above is the initial sketch for this teapot idea. I had a lot of fun making this form and I am excited to continue exploring it. I started by throwing it bottomless on the wheel and dropping a lid seat into it also on the wheel. I made it bottomless so I could squeeze in the sides to make it oval. In the time lapse below I am altering it with a surform to make the angles straighter and sharper.
After I got it to the desired shape I made a lid for it and then started making the attachments. I made the same type of spout I did in my previous blog post (chamomile creations). Below is a video of me attaching the spout. At the end of the video I begin to make the handle.
Below is a demonstration of me attaching the handle
After I attached the handle I applied the newsprint slip transfer. Here is a video of me drawing with slip onto the newspaper.
After the drawing is slightly dry I wet the teapot then apply the newsprint and press down until the slip transfers over to the teapot, demonstrated below:
Now it is all done and ready to be bisque fired. This teapot was made with cone 10 porcelain and a white cone 10 slip. For this one I will apply wax resit to the drawing and then spray orange slip onto the teapot. The wax resist will make sure that no orange slip get onto the drawing, or wherever the wax was applied. This will give me an end result of an orangish teapot with a white drawing on it.
I had a lot of fun with this form but after a talk with my professor I realized that it needs some tweaking. For the next one I will relax a bit and not try to make it so perfect and crisp so I can save time and also give the pot some life. I need to make sure the handle relates to the form because this one doesn't. I also will do something different with the bottom of the pot, potentially adding feet like the one in the sketch.
